General Sir Richard Shirreff

Sir Richard Shirreff is a strategy and risk management expert and the former Deputy Supreme Commander of NATO. He has extensive experience of building unity of effort with different nations, governments, the humanitarian and development community together with a wide variety of other stakeholders to resolve complex problems.

In his 37 years of military service, he saw combat as a tank commander in the First Gulf War, experienced the complexities of Northern Ireland during three tours and learned first-hand the challenges of bringing peace to the Balkans in Kosovo and Bosnia. He returned to Iraq as a multinational commander in 2006-7. His last seven years in uniform were spent in two senior NATO command posts: Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps and Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe; the Alliance’s deputy strategic commander and the most senior post in the Alliance open to a European.  In February 2016 he co-founded Strategia Worldwide Ltd, a global risk advisory company, which has since built up a sizeable portfolio of clients across different sectors. In 2016 his novel ‘2017: War with Russia’ was published in the UK, USA and Poland. It became a best seller and has been translated into eight languages.

Educated in England, he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford (Modern History) before being commissioned into the British Army from Sandhurst. He is an honorary fellow of Exeter College, Oxford.
